Website Footer – Proper Content or Leftovers?

Website Footer – Proper Content or Leftovers?

Working on my website footer this evening forced me to spend an inapropriate amount of time pondering what content I should place there. This topic is not something I’ve spent alot of time on previously, so at first I thought I would put whatever content I couldn’t fit elsewhere on the site in the footer, something I have a feeling many others do as well. But the more I thought about it the more I felt it could be a useful area of the site, so I did some research and found a few articles and blogs on the subject. The one that caught my eye the most was this article by Smashing Magazine. The article outlines several schools of thinking and provides examples of who does what and where.

Now I’m no web designer, so alot of the examples displayed in Smashing’s article are beyond my realm of implementation, but I was determined not to leave my footer without content and reason for being. So armed with my Wordpress platform, Arras theme, the Contact Form 7 plugin and a very basic understanding of HTML I went about creating a footer for the ages. Whether I’ve succeeded or not only time will tell, but I’m happy enough with what I cobbled together; including a Quick Comment form, navigation links and some general information about the site.

I’ve still got some space availble in the footer though, and would welcome any ideas you may have of what to populate it with. Just pop your idea in the comments box below and I’ll pick a “winner”.

In general I think its fair to say that the footer is a neglected piece of website real estate, but as the article listed above shows; it really doesn’t have to be.
