MySpace Logo Change – The Beginning of a New Strategy?

Those of you who have kept tabs on the battle for users by the big social networking sites, will already know that Facebook have usurped MySpace as the giant within the social web. Facebook’s successful expansion both in Europe and the US may very well be the differentiating factor. Though MySpace have expanded their international user base, they’ve still been unable to completely shed their US-centric appeal.

Now it seems MySpace are changing things internally and strategically to realign themselves in the social media space. A few weeks ago their logo was changed; the difference between the old logo and the new is that the tag line “A place for friends” has been dropped. This doesn’t mean that MySpace will drop its social network offering of course, such a step would be a bit drastic for a company that attracts 110 million visitors a month, but it may mean that they wish to focus their energy on other aspects, such as music and band sites, which they currently do quite well.

Techcrunch reports a few hiring’s and firing’s at MySpace recently, something which may indicate a change of strategy for the company that was bought by Fox Interactive Media for $580m back in 2005.

Whatever the thinking at MySpace is these days, I think they’ll struggle to recapture the crown that Facebook has taken over. A strategic realignment may be their smartest move.
